After an interesting Monaco and a very interesting Indy I went out to change the oil in the Mini. Last time it had been done was by a shop. The head of the bolt was in rough shape and they must of had the whole gorilla torque it. Now I have a stripped oil drain bolt to deal with. Ideas?

External hex? Small pipe wrench if you've got the space, I'm not familiar with Minis.

If anything you try makes it worse stop and take it to a shop with a welder. Have them weld a bolt onto it and remove it. I once made a rough situation waaaaay worse by continuing to screw with a bolt rounded off into the head of my Volvo boat motor. They will charge you next to nothing to do it and you’ll only be looking at a new drain plug rather than a tap and die job or a new oil pan. Good luck

+1 for this. You can also buy sockets with teeth that you hammer onto the stripped bolt head and can then twist off. Saved my bacon with my Civic’s alternator tensioner once.

Drill and tap a new one. Seriously. This is the tried-and-true solution.

Mine snapped off once. Had to use an easy out. Drill and reverse thread.

6 bucks cheap enough? The plug is aluminum. Just get a new one. The last Mini I worked on was rounded off also. avoid using a 12 point socket on it. I gave a few hits with a hammer + chisel on the OD of the plug.
